Neighbourhood Small Grants

In the Spring of 2021, 11-year-old Liam Lytle applied for a Neighbourhood Small Grant. Liam requested $500 to purchase supplies so that he could provide free bike maintenance and repair to his neighbours in Blewett. Liam replaced and pumped-up tires, adjusted brakes and derailleurs, and learned many other skills. He ended up not only fixing bikes but found out how rewarding it is to connect with one’s community. When asked about the project Liam said, “I learned how to tune bikes and that community care is important and helping others is a great way to make friends” ❤

Do you have a project idea? What can you dream up that would make Nelson a better place? Examples of funded projects include block parties, building a neighbourhood lending library, book-club, thanking local volunteers by hosting a potluck or providing them with treats, sharing a skill you have or helping isolated neighbours feel connected in some way. The possibilities are endless!

All these ideas and more are eligible for a Neighbourhood Small Grant from the Osprey Community Foundation in partnership with the Vancouver Foundation and the City of Nelson.

The Neighbourhood Small Grants program provides grants of up to $500 for residents to make their communities greater places to live, work and play by encouraging small-scale projects and initiatives. These grants are for anyone, any age, no experience necessary.

Activities must meet the current COVID-19 health orders and must be focused on supporting neighbours reconnecting socially and/or sharing skills and talents.

“This is a great opportunity to get neighbours connecting, creating and making lasting memories,” said Neighbourhood Small Grants Coordinator, Rachel Nissenbaum, “and best of all, anyone can apply.”
