Good Food, Good Neighbours: Supporting Seniors at Home
Twice a month, volunteers from the Nelson Community Food Centre load vehicles with carefully packed grocery boxes and head out into the community, delivering good food directly to residents who cannot easily access the Nelson Community Food Bank in person.
The Good Food Drop program was developed to support seniors living alone in community, facing barriers such as mobility challenges, lack of transportation, health concerns and other socio-economic obstacles. With growing demand from seniors in the community, additional funding from an Osprey Community Foundation Seniors grant, the Good Food Drop Program has been able to expand deliveries and ensure vulnerable residents have access to nutritional food and help seniors maintain their health and independence.

Each Good Food Box is carefully assembled to reflect the dietary needs and unique circumstances of each participant whenever possible. Staff and volunteers take into account specific requirements while also staying connected with recipients through regular phone calls. These check-ins often become meaningful conversations where participants share their stories and experiences.
For many seniors living alone, these moments of connection help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness. The conversations can be just as meaningful as the food itself, and participants frequently express deep gratitude for the opportunity to connect.
Programs like the Good Food Drop not only provide essential food access, they strengthen community care. Osprey Community Foundation is honored to support the Nelson Community Food Centre.
Thank you Nelson Community Food Centre for making a real difference in the lives of seniors.
