Community should be a verb

We asked, “What does Community mean to you?” And this is what the Community answered:

Community is about Belonging

• “The Kootenays eventually gave me something I’d never had, or could’ve even conceptualized before.”
• “Being newer to Nelson, I can say that I experience the feeling of interconnection and acceptance here more than I have anywhere else.”
• “Nelson gave us the opportunity to put down roots, raise a family, and build meaningful lives.”
• “We were hoping to find a community where we could truly belong, contribute and build a life together. Nelson has delivered that, time and time again.”
• “Most of all, we live in a wonderful place because of the other people who live here too.”

Community is about everyday kindness

• “I can walk down the street and receive a smile from the people who pass by.”
• “When you have been here for a year, you no longer know who you know and don’t know. So you say hello to everyone in case you know them!”
• “Community, to me, is built through thousands of everyday acts of kindness, collaboration and shared purpose.”
• “I feel I’m in the right community, one where everyone looks after each other.”
• “Made to feel special by some cheery remark, my separation barrier softened.”
• “All greeted from the heart, enveloped in these wee kindnesses.”
• “Your ‘hello darling’ was the sweetest part of my day.”

Community is about participation and giving back

• “The doing, the creating, the being a part of.”
• “Being involved alongside others creates a sense of meaning, belonging, and connection.”
