Maia Vezina Education Award

Osprey’s newest Fund has been established in Memory of Maia Vezina.

Maia Vezina, born January 23, 1994, was born in Dawson City, Yukon. At age 5 her family moved to Nelson, BC, where Maia thrived in school and in the arts. Maia is a graduate of L V Rogers Secondary School, class of 2012. She attended the University of Calgary, graduating in 2018 with a double major in English and Education.

In 2013 Maia suffered injuries to all four limbs due to a crash with a drunk driver. Three months later she returned to university in a wheelchair to continue her studies, managing one course that year. A five year program became a six year program and a very happy graduate walked the carpet to accept her two diplomas.

Maia had a dream to work with gifted children and develop a curriculum based on emotional intelligence. She lived her first dream upon graduation, becoming a teacher for a mixed aged class of gifted young children at the Eaton Arrowsmith  private school in Vancouver.

Maia tragically passed away on May 26, 2023, at the age of 29.

The Maia Vezina Education Award will be given out annually to a graduating student of L V Rogers Secondary School. Nelson, BC, entering post secondary in the field of Education. The applicant is asked to write a minimum 250 word essay describing their reason for wanting to pursue their dream of becoming an educator and their goals for the future.

Maia’s family is proud to establish this Award in support of future local educators.
